ADVOCACY TRAINING & OPPORTUNITY TO DEVELOP POLICY PLATFORM FOR 20=

12, 2009, United Homeless Healthcare Partners will present a day of
policy development beginning with an advocacy workshop and continuing
with a planning session to result in a "policy platform" th=
at
reflects the needs of the homeless residents of Los Angeles County an=
d those
that serve them.
Advocacy Workshop
The advocacy workshop will be focused on the needs of
non-profit organizations and government agencies and will begin =
at 9
a.m. and continue until noon. It will be led by:
- Clifford Sarkin, Children's Defense Fund
- Victoria Evers, Los Angeles County, Intergovernme=
ntal
Branch
- Dora Leong Gallo, A Community of Friends
- Carol Wilkins, Corporation for Supportive Housing,
Intergovernmental Policy
The purposes of this training will be to review advoca=
cy
guidelines and restrictions and to study successful strategies and
techniques that can be used by UHHP, as well as member organizations.=
Policy Development
With a new federal administration and a new state
legislature, it is time to review and renew the UHHP policy prioritie=
s.
The afternoon session on March 12 will begin at 1:30 p.m. and continu=
e to
4:30 p.m. During this session, the UHHP Policy Committee will
facilitate a planning session that results in a "policy
platform" that will form the basis of policy work for the
organization over the next twelve to eighteen months.
These sessions will be held at The California Endowmen=
t,

Region 9 Homeless Healthcare Conference will be held February 2 - 3, =

at the Sheraton Universal Hotel in Universal City. The theme is
"Setting the Stage for Premier Health Care." There will be a
full agenda that addresses the challenges and complex issues posed by
homelessness today. Experts in the field will present up-to-date info=

and innovative approaches on a wide range of topics, including Wound
Care, Street Outreach, Re-entry Issues for Post-Incarcerated Homeless,
Effective Drug Treatment Strategies, HRSA & UDS updates, Innovati=
ve
Dental Treatments, General Oral Health for the Non-Dentist, Hospital
Discharge Planning, Legislative Policy Updates, Cognitive Impairment,
Veterans & PTSD, Case Management, HCH 101, and Motivational
Interviewing.
