Workshop Series 1


United Homeless Health Care Partners (UHHP) is now offering a certification training for case managers that would like to assist clients with disability benefits applications. This training series is designed to:

  • Teach case mangers the “best practices” in disability benefits applications;
  • Help case managers replicate the strategies that have  contributed to high application approval rates in Los Angeles County.

After completing the three classes that make up this course, case managers will receive a certification of completion and onsite technical assistance from the Social Security Administration. Additionally, case managers will be connected to a network of colleagues, trainers and resources that will provide the ongoing support necessary to master the benefits application process. This benefits initiative is a collaborative partnership with:

  • Social Security Administration
  • Disability Determination Services
  • Los Angeles County Department of Health Services
  • Los Angeles Community Benefits Advocates

1. Steps to Successful Disability Applications - Introductory Course

This introductory class is the first in a series of three classes leading to the "Certification in Preparing Disability Claims" and provides an opportunity for homeless advocates to better understand the framework and overall process for applying for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and/or Social Security Disability Insurance benefits. Participants will also better understand their role as advocates, how to engage clients, gather appropriate documentation and work in a team environment to complete a comprehensive disability application.

During this training, students will:

  •   Learn the basics of the disability determination process;
  •   Understand the barriers for homeless applicants and strategies for overcoming them;
  •   Learn specific strategies used to engage clients;
  •   Understand the various components of the disability application;
  •   Learn why documentation is critical for a successful application;
  •   Discover the best methods for gathering documentation

This training is provided by advocates with over 20 years of experience processing benefits applications for disabled individuals specifically designed for case managers, benefits advocates and other homeless advocates that plan to or are currently assisting clients prepare SSI/SSDI applications.

2. Steps to Successful Disability Applications -Advanced Course

This advanced training provides an opportunity for homeless advocates that have completed the introductory course to dive deeply into the disability benefits application process. Participants will learn, in detail, the application process, the component parts of the application along with tips and strategies for developing the application narrative. Developing the application narrative and reports content for the disability application will be at the heart of this training. At the conclusion of this training students will:

  • Learn the new and improved application process based on best practices;
  • Learn how to screen clients;
  • Understand what information is needed for each section of the application;
  • Learn tips on how to develop narrative that best supports each of the disability application sections;
  • Receive guidance from experienced benefits advocates.

3. Learn to Mastering the Application With Social Security

This is the final training leading to certification in Disability Benefits. The Social Security Administration created a training workshop designed to make the application for benefits process easier to understand and navigate. 

Representatives from SSA will walk you through the essential steps necessary to thoroughly “complete a package” for benefits.

In one fast-moving day, you will:

  • Understand the basics – An overview of Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits made easy;
  •  Learn how to properly complete the Supplemental Security Income application (SSA –  8000-BK)
  •  Learn how to complete the Online Social Security application and Online Disability Report;
  • Receive guidance from a Disability Determination Services (DDS) specialist;
  • Receive guidance on how to properly complete subsequent SSA forms pertinent to the claims process;
  • Learn tips on how to easily navigate the Social Security website;
  • Learn how to file an Online Social Security Appeal for benefits.
